What is a contraceptive coil?
If you are worried about having an unplanned pregnancy and want a contraceptive method that lasts many years without you needing to think about it, having a coil may be the answer.
There are two types of coil available for use. Both are highly effective, reliable forms of contraception.
An IUD is a small T-shaped plastic and copper device that’s put into your womb (uterus) by a doctor or nurse.
It releases copper to stop you from getting pregnant and protects against pregnancy for between 5 and 10 years. It’s sometimes called a “coil” or “copper coil”.
An IUS is a small, T-shaped plastic device that’s put into your womb (uterus) by a doctor or nurse.
It releases the hormone progestogen to stop you from getting pregnant and lasts for 3 to 5 years, depending on the brand.

Who is eligible to have the contraceptive coil fitted
All our female patients are eligible to have the contraceptive coil fitted.
How to book a coil fitting appointment
If you wish to book a coil fitting appointment you can do so using the below methods:
You can book your coil fitting appointment through our online messaging service called Accurx, this is the quickest and easiest way to get in touch with us and you will get a response usually on the same day.
- Click the green Book Appointment button at the top of this webpage.
- Click ‘Sign up or login to Consult your GP’
- Click ‘Sign up as a new user’ OR ‘Login existing user’
- Once you are fully registered you can write your request to book
- Let us know if you have any preference for the date and time.
- You will receive a response usually on the same day.
If you are unable to use AskmyGP then please phone us on 0161 226 7777 and book your coil fitting appointment with someone on our reception team.
If you would prefer to book your coil fitting appointment in person then please come down to the practice and ask to speak with reception.
